CACTUS GROWING TIPS
Cacti and succulents thrive in dry climates. They don’t like or need much water!
Soil should be dry through to the bottom of the pot before watering. Wrap a piece of paper towel around a thin stick and push it into the soil. If it comes up dry you can add water. If it comes up damp – don’t water!
When watering, add water until it comes out the bottom drainage hole(s). If you don't have drainage holes, drill some! Don’t put the pot on a dish or other container to catch and hold the water. Overwatering -- with water retention -- is the main reason for cactus problems. Simply put: too much watering rots their roots!
Cacti and succulents thrive in sandy, loosely packed soil. They don’t like clay and hard-packed dirt!
Soil should be loosely packed, sandy and relatively porous with good drainage. If you aren’t sure of your soil, get some cactus soil from your garden supplies dealer. You can also make your own using a mixture of 2/3 potting soil and 1/3 plain, unscented “kitty litter”.
The general rule is: When in doubt, dry it out!
Cacti and succulents live in hot, sunny climates. They like lots of sunshine!
Most cacti enjoy full sunshine to bloom. Others tolerate partial sunlight and bloom.
